Planning for progression in reading and spoken language, this course looks at the curriculum beyond phonics.

It builds on the messages in earlier DPSI English courses. With the publication of Telling the story: the English education subject report in March 2024, this timely course covers:

  • Supporting fluency and confidence.

  • The role of the spoken language curriculum.

  • Fluency before comprehension.

  • Strategies or curriculum?

  • What does this mean for guided reading?

  • Choice of texts – planning for progression.

  • Inclusion and SEND.

  • From learning to read to reading to learn.

This two-hour online live course is for primary teachers and curriculum leaders. The session will provide clarity about how to ensure pupils know more, remember more, and can do more in reading and spoken language. It includes ideas, examples, resources and routines to use in school.

Attendees will gain crucial information about reading and spoken language beyond phonics.
